This weekend is the most awaited with The Super Bowl Sunday 2012. The Super Bowl is the most awaited sports event in the US and it is also regarded as the most prized event. This is because Super Bowl enjoys a huge fan following in the US and it is the most watched television program in the US. This has led the advertisers to jump in the wagon and the best ones are well appreciated.

The Super Bowl Sunday 2012 is between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. Both these teams met four years ago as well and the game was won by the New York Giants as it was billed as the greatest Super Bowl match ever. This year they are at it again and the stage is already set for another great clash between the two teams.

The Super Bowl Sunday 2012 is going to take place in Indianapolis at the Lucan Oil Stadium and Madonna is slated to perform at half-time. The game will start at around 6:30 in the evening. The tickets to the venue can be bought on various different websites online and even on the official NFL website.

What is Super Bowl?

The Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League (NFL). The Super Bowl was first played in 66-67 and since then it has become the most celebrated sports event in the history of the US. The day is now the Super Bowl Sunday and is now a National Holiday as well with most Americans either sitting in their homes and watching the game or going to the stadium and watching it.

Origins of Super Bowl

Super Bowl started after a merger pact between the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL). Since the two leagues were taking a toll on the players and the fans, the winners of both these leagues were to clash at a “Super Bowl” match.

Hence, since 1966-67 the Super Bowl has grown in popularity and been the “match of the matches” in American sports.

Television Ratings

Since the beginning, the Super Bowl Sunday has climbed the television ratings and become the most watched show on TV in the US. Its popularity is unprecedented and many advertisers and television channels have jumped on this opportunity to either launch a new product or campaign or the pilot of a new TV show.

Many Super Bowl ads have garnered praise as they have fit the enjoyable mood of the people and led to memorable campaigns.

Entertainment

Super Bowl Sunday is one of the most enjoyable sports events in the history of the US sports. At half-time there is a show which features school and college marching bands, popular singers and musicians performed. The half-time has been designated to half hour and even the American Anthem is sung.

Some of the notable artists who have come to perform at the half time have been Michael Jackson, U2 and many others as well. However, the Super Bowl of 2004 had Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson which turned controversial due to a wardrobe malfunction. Since then, MTV has been banned from airing any more half time Super Bowl shows.

The Super Bowl Sunday 2012 is slated to have Madonna and Kelly Clarkson. Even Cirque De Soleil will be performing at half time. Apart from that, the Super Bowl after party will have celebrities and stars which are also a star attraction. The Super Bowl commercials are in a different league of their own and Super Bowl Sunday 2012 is nothing different.

The commercial space was sold at an average of $3.5 million per 30-sec which has become the highest so far in the Super Bowl history. The Super Bowl Sunday 2012 has a commercial by Pepsi, M&M, Doritos, GoDaddy, Volkswagen and many more. All these commercials have been specially made keeping in mind the Super Bowl Sunday 2012 and have big stars featuring in these commercials.

The Super Bowl Sunday 2012 is slated to be the best in the Super Bowl history due to the two teams that are clashing. These teams had met before and it is still regarded as the best Super Bowl match ever. Apart from that, even the viewership is to rise this year and the commercials have spent more than usual. Indianapolis has been redecorated for the event and people are rushing to the city. Those who are not will be watching the Super Bowl Sunday 2012 live on TV.

The NFL Super bowl

NFL Super Bowl stands for National Football League Super Bowl which refers to the championship game of the highest level of professional American football in the U.S. The NFL super bowl season begins in late summer of the previous year. The Super Bowl has a unique way of identifying each game by using Roman numbers as opposed to the year in which the game was held. The NFL Super Bowl was created as a merger agreement between American football league (AFL) and its rival NFL. It was agreed that the NFL and AFL would play a combined championship game until the merger was officiated in 1970. Forty years after the inception, the NFL was successful in overtaking several rival leagues. The road to success didn’t come without obstacles. In 1960, NFL encountered serious competition when the AFL was formed as it started losing fans and players. This led to serious talks to merge the two leagues. Both leagues agreed on a merger agreement before the 1966 season. The agreement was to commence in the 1970 season.

The Super Bowl name originated from Lamar Hunt a well known owner of an AFL team called Kansas City Chiefs. According to Lamar Hunt, the name Super Bowl originated from his head after he saw his children playing with a super ball toy. In July 1966, He wrote a letter to then NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle to have the name ‘Super Bowl’ officiated.  Although the owners of the league ignored his request and instead called the championship league AFL-NFL Championship Game, the name Super Bowl was picked by the media and it later became official in the beginning of the third annual game. The NFL Super Bowl thus derived its name from the bowl game and by the time the first Super Bowl game was played, the term was already popular in American football. The first team to win the Super Bowl was the NFL’s Green Bay Packers which won the first two Super Bowls. After this two wins, some team owners became skeptical on the future of the merger in terms of the competitiveness of the merger. Many people doubted the ability of AFL teams as compared to their NFL counterparts.

With time however, this perception changed when an AFL’s team, New York Jets was able to win Super Bowl III after defeating NFL’s Baltimore Colts in the finals in Miami. One year later, another AFL’s team, Kansas City Chiefs also defeated NFL’s Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV by defeating them 23–7 in New Orleans. This was the famous final AFL-NFL World Championship Game that was played before the official merger. The beginning of the 1970 season marked a realignment of the NFL into two conferences which included the former teams of the AFL together with three other NFL teams namely the Colts, Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers which would now constitute the AFC (American Football Conference). The remaining NFL teams would then form the (NFC) National Football Conference. The champions of the NFC and AFC would then play each other in the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl is played on a day considered a de facto and known as the Super Bowl Sunday. The day is characterized by high food consumption after thanksgiving. In addition, the NFL Super Bowl is the most watched television broadcast in America yearly. Super Bowl XLV that was played in 2011 set a record as the most watched television program in the history of America.  It attracted 111 million viewers breaking the previous year’s record. The Super Bowl also boosts of being the most watched sports events worldwide mostly because of its North American audiences. The high viewership of the Super Bowl attracts the most expensive commercial airtime charges for advertisements as any adverts aired at this time are bound to reach a targeted audience of over 100 million people. Companies yearly develop their most expensive and best advertisements to be aired during Super Bowl. Commercials have therefore over the years become a significant part of the event. Musicians have also performed during half-time ceremonies and attracted more viewers.Super bowl can boast of being the most prestigious American sporting event in history. The NFL Super Bowl is also among the best football leagues in the world alongside leagues such as the English football premier league.
